Annemarie Carroll, Ph.D., LCP
I’m a licensed clinical psychologist and yoga teacher. My joy lies in integrating these traditions to support clients on their journeys of growth and healing. My interest in this integration came out of my own personal experiences with meditation and yoga. I first became curious about mindfulness and meditation as a teenager when I realized that “looking at” the chronic headaches I was having at the time made them less painful. Yoga found me later as I searched for ways to manage the intense physical and emotional strain of fertility treatments. My time on my mat, helped me find the calm, nourishment and acceptance I so needed during that process.
Through my personal experiences, I realized that psychotherapy’s emphasis on the mind only was deeply missing something. I became fascinated by yoga’s potential for healing and curious about the possibility of bringing yoga into the psychotherapy setting. I completed my 200 hour yoga teacher training in 2008 and Inner Wisdom Yoga & Psychotherapy was born. In 2011, I completed my 500 hour therapeutic yoga training. I have since taken multiple trainings on the integration of yoga and psychology and have enjoyed bringing this approach into the therapy setting.
I am a life-long student and this field offers so many opportunities to keep learning. In 2018 I finished EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) training and have become a firm believer in its use for processing, integrating and healing trauma. It’s been an excellent addition to the other somatic approaches I use in the counseling setting.
In addition to my work with clients at Inner Wisdom Yoga & Psychotherapy, I am the Program Head for Virginia Western Community College’s Human Services program. I believe that teaching and practicing complement each other – that my work with clients makes me a better professor and my teaching makes me a better therapist. I am so grateful to have the privilege of doing work that I love and find so meaningful.
In my free time, I enjoy playing in my sweet little city of Roanoke, Virginia, hiking in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains, singing and making music with my friends, volunteering with my favorite Roanoke non-profit organization, Girls Rock Roanoke, and cuddling my pug, Baxter.
